Red State: The Protests, The Film, and the Unforgettable Q&A Session

11 years ago, I was introduced (by a former boss of mine) to a little movie called Mallrats. That became the beginning of a great journey with writer/director/producer Kevin Smith and his work. Last year, I attended a Q&A show of his and loved hearing all these stories of his time making movies and working with certain actors in his career.

When they announced a few months ago that Kevin Smith would be coming back to Kansas City in May (with Jason Mewes), I was ecstatic. So imagine my surprise when he announced just weeks later that he would be coming in March to pre-screen his latest film, Red State. Me... a movie geek that loves Kevin Smith's work.... getting the chance to attend such an event. I was researching ticket prices immediately. My mom bought tickets for her and I to go a couple weeks later.

Leading up to the night, Kevin Smith did the usual radio spots and Twitter promotions. But this was the Kansas City show... and it got a lot more interesting, thanks to the members of the Westboro Baptist Church. The movie stirred up a lot of controversy the past year since it was believed to be about the Phelps and their many antics. Just like the last time Kevin was in town, they planned to protest prior to the show, but I don't think they expected to be invited to see the movie and get involved in the Q&A.

They accepted.

Oh... this just got interesting. Then, hours before the show, Kevin decided to give out 100 tickets to anyone that came to the Midland with their own picket signs. The most creative ones got tickets. Now I was more excited to see what the night was going to bring.

My mom and I make our drive down town and this is some of what we saw when we drove by (no, this isn't my video... but glad I found it):

Okay, so the protest was about 15 people (which was double the amount from last year). But seeing the counter protesters was highly entertaining. My mom and I walked around to look at some of the signs before entering the theater. We have some very creative people in the city!

After we got in the theater, grabbed a drink and got seated, we didn't have to wait long for the show to begin. Kevin came out to great applause and many of us gave him a standing ovation. He was wearing a hockey jersey and looked like he had lost some weight (good for him). He acknowledged the Phelps family, who had seats in the first balcony. The audience was pretty courteous to them; I recall only hearing a few half-assed "boos." Kevin then mentions that after the movie, Megan Phelps-Roper would join him onstage to give her personal review of the film. He keeps the rest of the opening speech short and introduces the film. Then... the movie begins.

Three high school teens decide to go to a nearby town to have sex with a woman that they found through the Internet. They end up finding themselves inside the church of an extremely fundamentalist group. The leader of the church, Abin Cooper (Michael Parks), takes the word of God to a new level, in which he and his church members murder those who commit sin, which is witnessed by one of the teens and the adult members of the church. The teens, now extremely terrified, try to escape the same fate. They end up in the middle of a hostage situation with the ATF, lead by Joseph Kennan (John Goodman). This begins a lot of bloodshed on both ends of the terrorist type acts.

This movie is definitely a horror movie... but on a different level. If you think about how leaders like Fred Phelps can get when they get worked up over something they are passionate about (like what he "preaches" to others), then imagine what would happen if he decided to take matters into his own hands and slay others "in the name of God." That, to me, is scary on a realistic level. Kevin warned the audience that this film will send you through a weird mix of emotions... and it did.

The movie does have good dialogue, as Kevin Smith has developed throughout his career. The church service scene is one of the most well-written (and acted) scenes he has ever created. That same scene has the first death, which was executed in a way I had never seen before. Some stranger is plastic wrapped onto a cross and gagged. Then, when the church members were ready to kill him, they wrapped his head with plastic wrap and aim a gun at the top of his head to shoot downward. They do it this way to prevent spilling of homosexual blood in the church. Yeah, it was fucked up.

The acting was phenomenal. Michael Parks owned that role... there was nobody else that could have executed it as well as he did. John Goodman was the character everyone rooted for, all the way to the very end. Kerry Bishe (she played Cheyenne- the granddaughter of Abin Cooper) had the breakout role of the film, and I hope some major academy recognizes that when awards season comes around next year. Overall, this movie was very good and I cannot wait for its release in theaters this October so I can see it again! Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

When the movie was on, Kevin tweeted about how we responded to the film. Apparently, Kansas City was the most bloodthirsty audience (at that point on the tour). Then again, we have the Phelps living in our backyard, so to see fictional versions of them becoming part of the bloodbath was a lot more enjoyable to us. We laughed at the beginning, got silent during Abin Cooper's speech, and fiercely cheered when a church member was killed (which happened a lot). At one of the most epic deaths, someone yelled "Winning," causing a lot of laughter and cheering (and made me smile, since it felt just like sitting in the theater when I go to the monthly Rocky Horror showings). We also cheered for John Goodman... a lot. He was the hero and we loved him for it.

All right... time for the Q&A session, which was being filmed (I had a feeling it would).

The first thing Kevin brought up was that the members of the WBC that stayed for the movie left 15 minutes in... followed by a comment that we have now found a way to drive them away from protesting at funerals (just start showing the movie to them!). There were a few good questions about casting, like that if George Carlin were still alive, he would have been considered for the role of Abin Cooper (but as Kevin stated numerous times, nobody other than Michael Parks could have done that role justice). A couple people asked film making questions and such, which Kevin went into detail about his plans about helping independent filmmakers get their works showcased.

Then, the unexpected happened.

I noticed a couple of people standing at the microphones to my right. Something seemed different about them. They introduced themselves. Libby Phelps and Joshua Phelps-Roper. Everyone got silent. They were two of Fred Phelps grandchildren and they emancipated themselves from the church (and their family). The audience went wild with applause.

Two minutes later, they were onstage... and remained there for the next hour.

Libby and Josh basically recounted to the audience of how they left the church and their family (Libby left about two years ago and Josh left when he was 19- which I think was about 7-8 years ago). They confirmed that the church was basically a cult. They did not celebrate any holidays except for birthdays (so no Christmas or Easter... funny how they call themselves a RELIGIOUS organization and not celebrate those days). Both of them have found love, as Libby is engaged and Josh is married with a son. They also have had difficulty finding something they can believe in when it comes to organized religion.

When asked about the movie, Libby and Josh gave some very awesome insight. During a scene where the ATF and the Cooper family are having a shooting battle, Abin asks his daughter for some sweet tea. Libby pointed out that she experienced similar instances when she used to protest. They would talk about dinner plans and stuff while holding picket signs and getting things thrown at them. This brought Kevin to tears and when he hugged Libby he said that her comment "made up for a year's worth of bad reviews for Cop Out" (and the audience cheered).

The Q&A ends with a couple more questions before Kevin (and the Phelps) get a massive standing ovation. Since it was filmed, I predict that when Red State is released on DVD the Kansas City Q&A will be in the bonus features. I'm almost willing to put money on it.

So, there you have it. My epic evening at the Red State pre-screening. I was so glad I got to experience this (and my Mom too). It was one of those "you HAD to be there" kind of nights. At least I was kind enough to share a lot of it to my friends and readers.

Kevin Smith is coming back May 2nd to Kansas City, with Jason Mewes. My mom is already planning to get us tickets. Seeing Kevin Smith three times within a year? Wow... how did that become possible??? :-)

Recap: The 37th Annual People's Choice Awards

Nothing says a new year like the beginning of a bunch of awards shows!!! Our first one: the People's Choice Awards. Unlike the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, this awards show is voted on by us, the consumers that enjoy movies, music and television. I bet you are a little curious as to how everybody voted, or glad that I wrote this blog so you didn't have to watch for two hours just to see your favorite celebrity for five seconds, LOL. Well, lets get this show on the road!

-Queen Latifah, the host, opens the show by walking down the aisles toward the stage with a group of dancers. She sings Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" and get the audience pumped up and excited! I don't think I've seen that many people fist pumping at the same time... ever. I need to acknowledge I've never gone to a beach for Spring Break (that may help justify things).

-The first award, presented by Jennifer Aniston, is Favorite Comedic Star.... Adam Sandler. While accepting the award, Sandler is told by Aniston that the movie Grown Ups won for Favorite Comedy Film. Rob Schneider and David Spade join Sandler onstage and leave short, blippy speeches.

-Queen Latifah presents a sneak peek of the movie The Dilemma, starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James.

-The award for Favorite Talk Show Host goes to Conan O'Brien.

-Sir Elton John presents the award for Favorite Country Artist, won by Taylor Swift. Before thanking her fans, Swift congratulates John for becoming a father :-)

-Selena Gomez performs. I thought it was kind of a sleepy song and I noticed that she was either singing too quietly or the microphone wasn't turned up loud enough. After the performance, she thanks her fans for winning Favorite Breakout Artist.

-Queen Latifah shows some footage of technical difficulties prior to the show. It included her in a hospital with Private Practice doctors, then with Dr. Drew doing an intervention. Latifah wakes up with the cast of Bones examining her body. She finally wakes up for good from the dream sequence to the stage directors requesting the backup host, Kathy Griffith. It was a comical skit indeed.

-Kate Walsh and Taye Diggs present the award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor. Neil Patrick Harris wins for How I Met Your Mother. He mentions that the last time he won this award, it was for the Doogie Howser Comedy Hour. He thought that was pretty cool. :-)

-Walsh and Diggs continue and present for Favorite TV Comedy Actress. As I predicted, Jane Lynch wins for Glee (which the show wins for Favorite TV Comedy). Lynch presented a very heartfelt speech (something Sue Sylvester would NEVER do). She was joined onstage by Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith.

-Latifah (in a gorgeous pink dress that I would wear myself... note to self, research designer) presents the video that won Favorite Viral Video Star. It was for "Single Ladies Devastation." It's a video where three kids are singing Beyonce's song. The little boy is told by his Dad that he's not a single lady, causing him to bawl like crazy. So adorable yet so funny!!!

-Two new actors present the award for Favorite TV Drama Actress. The award went to Lisa Edelstein from House. House also wins the award for Favorite TV Drama.

-Taylor Swift returns to the stage to present the award for Favorite Movie Actor. Dammit... Robert Pattison and Taylor Lauter are nominees! Oh good, they didn't win. :-)  Johnny Depp did... and he was actually there to accept his award (he doesn't normally make appearances). He told Swift that he would be in trouble with his daughter if he didn't say hi to her. How cute.

-Queen Latifah gossips with the Kardashian sisters in the audience. It was goofy and lasted about two minutes... just enough Kardashian for me!

-Miranda Cosgrove (ICarly!!!) and Jim Parsons present the award for Favorite Movie Star Under 25 (basically High School Musical, Twilight and Harry Potter people). Zac Efron wins. He was very classy and acknowledged his other nominees. He was very classy in his acceptance speech.

-The audience (and us home viewers) are presented with a sneak peek of the movie Season of the Witch, starring Nicholas Cage.

-The award for Favorite TV Guilty Pleasure goes to Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I guess I can deal with the girls a little longer.

-Kid Rock is given the People's voice award and performs a new song! I missed hearing the name of it, but it was enjoyable!

-Hawaii Five-O wins for Favorite New TV Drama. Kind of ironic for it being a remake of an older TV show. The cast thanks the fans via Satellite.

-$#*t My Dad Says wins Favorite New TV Comedy. William Shatner accepts via Satellite.

-Ahhh!!! True Blood fix. Stephen Moyer and Malin Akerman present the award for Favorite Movie Actress. Kristen Stewart wins. I had a feeling that there would be a win for the Twihards somewhere! She did mention that she was a vampire earlier today, while filming Breaking Dawn.

-Supermodel Nikki Taylor comes onstage and represents Cover Girls national campaign.

-Queen Latifah visits the audience again. She says hi to Katy Perry before going "hysterical" with the Twilight cast. Again, goofy/silly little bit of interaction.

-Time for Favorite Female Artist!!! Mrs. Russell Brand (alright, Katy Perry) wins!!! She actually wins two awards, but since I was distracted momentarily by facebook chat, I can't recall what the other award was for (Best Song of the Year, maybe???).

-Vanessa Williams discusses the Special Olympics and encourages everyone to become a fan and support the United States team for the summer's world games in Greece.

-Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman present the last award of the night: Favorite Movie of the Year. I'm excited!!! The nominees are: Toy Story 3, Iron Man 2, Alice in Wonderland, Inception, and Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The only movie I have yet to see of the nominees is Inception (I know, I know... I own it and will get to it soon) And the favorite movie is:

Twilight Saga: Eclipse (also winner of Favorite Drama movie)

Yeah, it's the People's Choice Awards... meaning the Twihards voted, and voted, AND VOTED for it to beat the other films.

Anyways, that's the end of the show! Not too shabby this year but I'm waiting for a few other upcoming award shows in the next several weeks: The Golden Globes, The Grammys, and the Academy Awards. Yes, I will probably blog about those too!

2010 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show- A Recap

You know it's the beginning of the holiday season when the Victoria's Secret Fashion show airs on television. This is the only fashion show that I make sure I catch every year and this year's show did not disappoint!!! As much as I would love to feature every single outfit, that would make this blog so freaking long. I will feature the outfits that I loved the most from the show.

Before the models, I will review the performers, which were Katy Perry and Akon.

Katy Perry looked and sounded gorgeous!!! I loved the blend of blue and pink in her first outfit, when she performed "Firework." Then, when she performed during the Pink collection presentation, the yellow dress contrasted beautifully with her black hair and black boots. I loved that she did a medley of "Teenage Dream/ Hot N Cold/ California Girls." Her music is very appropriate for the youthful, colorful Pink collection!

Akon performed his single "Angel"... talk about a perfect song to feature on the show!!! It was very classy to have him in a suit while the girls walked down the runway in contrasting white outfits. It was a beautiful segment of the show and it added a classy touch!

And now.... onto the beautiful models!!!!!

I've always liked the Rocker Angel look. To have the corset shaped like a heart is way too cool and cute! I would so buy that! I also liked the dark teal wings... a bit of light and dark to the ensemble!!!

The whole segment where the models were dressed in random sports clothing... cuteness. I don't think I will ever see this colorful of a lacrosse outfit anywhere else!

Okay, my favorite flowers are roses... so when I saw this I instantly loved it! I wouldn't hesitate to wear my black bra and panties and wrap this floral arrangement around my body.

Simple lingerie and fluffy wings.... classy and elegant!

I missed this portion of the show (hey, I'm a Mom and the kiddo needed to be tucked into bed). My favorite is the pink lingerie with the pink, red, and orange wings.... what can I say? I'm a sucker for color!

These wings were just amazing.... so much that I forgot to look at the lingerie! When this model walked onstage surrounded by orange-ish trees... she looked absolutely amazing. You could tell she loved wearing this outfit; she always had a smile on her face!

A few of the ladies wore peacock themed outfits and wings... this one is my favorite. Not only did this model have beautiful wings, but to have the feathers around her waist added to the beautiful dark blue bra and panties.

Onto the best part of the show... the Pink Collection! This outfit was my FAVORITE of the night!!! It was a lot of fun, flirty, and very Rainbow Brite chic!!! It makes me want to go back to Halloween and update my costume with all the cuteness. Oh well, maybe I will repeat my costume next year and incorporate the fun and flirty side that Victoria's Secret showed off, LOL.

And that's a wrap! It was overall a very beautiful show and all of the models were absolutely gorgeous. I know what I'll be looking for the next time I go to Victoria's Secret!!!

The Rocky Horror Glee Show, A Review

I remember reading an issue of Entertainment Weekly this summer which announced that Glee was going to pay tribute to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I had mixed feelings about it. A part of me was excited because I had seen the Lady Gaga Glee episode and thought it did a pretty good job. The other part of me was afraid it was not going to do the cult film justice. Since I was at work last night, I didn't get to see it. But I did read some reviews from other Rocky fanatics and some entertainment blogs. Then, right before I started watching the episode, my Dad was telling me about it. Whoa.... my Dad watched Glee.

Glee: The Music - The Rocky Horror Glee Show, Glee Cast

Anyway... let's get down to business, shall we???

The episode starts off with lips ("Science Fiction/Double Feature")... well, they are definitely off to a decent start. Wait a second... they altered lyrics and the song was shortened by less than half. I am already laughing... that's a bad sign for the rest of the episode. Then, it jumps to the students performing "Over at the Frankenstein Place" onstage. I'm liking how the set looks, but not so much the fact that the entire cast was onstage (hiding behind set pieces). I also instinctively raise my hand in the air when the line "there's a light" is performed... I guess going to the live shows have corrupted me, lol.

We now enter the actual Glee stuff. Mr. Schuester finds out that Emma went to a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with her boyfriend. This makes him jealous and yet, inspires him to get the Glee Club to perform the musical. You do not decide to do Rocky Horror out of spite... shame on you Mr. Schuester!!! So when he presents it to his students, there are a lot of mixed feelings. Some of them love it, some of them have no idea what it's about, and some argue that it's not appropriate for a high school production. This reminded me of when I daydreamed about my high school doing Rocky Horror (and that I wished for it do the film justice... like only have seniors who were 18 perform it, obviously because of the sexuality). Okay moving on...

Enter Meatloaf and Barry Bostwick (Asshole! yes, I did shout that at the screen). They were some sort of tv producers for the local news station (I think... I was too wrapped up in the amazement that they were actually on Glee) and talking to Sue about the Glee Club's Rocky production. Ah... why couldn't they have been on the show more? I might have liked it better.

Then Finn and Rachel practice "Dammit Janet." Hmm... they actually got the choreography pretty damned accurate. I was pretty proud of that. I think Rachel's voice is too whiny for Janet, though. The next scene is when Emma's boyfriend Carl (John Stamos) auditions for the high school play by singing "Hot Patootie/ Bless My Soul." I've heard John Stamos sing before, and he's pretty good. I think he did a decent job on the show, however I am a HUGE Meatloaf fan. Nobody can upstage him... I refuse to allow it. So when Mr. Schuester asks Carl to perform a Frankenfurter song, Carl flips out. He says that it's inappropriate for a high school production and that wearing the right garments is not right outside the bedroom. Fucking hypocrite... he's the one that takes Emma to the show and is now trying to justify that it's wrong. *shakes head*

Time for "Sweet Transvestite." This was the WORST number on the episode. It was extremely short and the choreography wasn't even close to being accurate. Since Mercedes decided to be Dr. Frankenfurter, some of the lyrics were altered: "I'm not much of a man" turned into "I'm not much of a girl." Wow... that really pissed me off. Who cares if a girl is playing the role? You don't change those lyrics (most of the floor show productions have females playing Dr. Frankenfurter, but you don't see them saying "girl" just because they are female). Now, when they changed "transsexual" to "sensational," I was fine with that... for the simple fact that Glee is on public television and the FCC would have been throwing out some fines if that wasn't changed.

Three of the students are dressed as Columbia. None of the costumes are even close to the authenticity of the film. Shame, shame, shame.

Emma offers to help Mr. Schuester work on his role as Rocky (since the student felt uncomfortable in his teeny gold shorts... of course you would get the self-conscious teen in this production). They perform "Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me" in an empty classroom. Basically Mr. Schuester loses his shirt. That's it. Lame. Oh, and I noticed that "heavy petting" was changed to "heavy sweating"... another FCC friendly move, I assume.

When practicing the show again, Sue shouts out "This play is terrible!" I agreed. Then came the "Janet! Brad! Dr. Scott! Rocky!" montage. Again, I caught myself doing floor show shout outs... "Rocky! Bullwinkle!"

Mr. Schuester finally confesses to the Glee Club that he went into the Rocky Horror show for all the wrong reasons. He explains that the movie was popular for people who were outcasts who felt they needed a sense of belonging with others around them, much like the Glee club. Going back to my Rocky Horror blog, I mentioned that I never really noticed that the musical was cult or outcast friendly until I was in high school. All I saw was a fun, sexual musical. *Shrugs* So Mr. Schuester pulls the plug on the play, but says that they will still perform the music.

The show ends with the entire cast performing the "Time Warp."

Yea.... I think the phrase cluster fuck is the right word for this. For one, they perform this on the set of the Lab.. wrong. There are two Magentas and two Columbias.... where are the Unconventional Conventionalists or the Criminologist (with no fucking neck)??? A damn shame, if you ask me. And what is going on with the boxy look of Magenta's skirt... that bugged me like crazy. Although, for a collaboration effort of a high school tribute... that's basically what it was, toned down for age appropriate-ness and it represented many elements of the film.

I think I speak for all Rocky Horror enthusiasts out there.... if we had the control, we would have done it so much better. It's a good thing I'm going to a Fishnets and Floorshows Rocky Horror production this weekend... it will help me shake off my frustrations with this Glee episode.

2010 Video Music Awards: A Retrospect

For those who just want to know what happened at the VMA's, but not sit though it... here is my play-by-play of the night.

The show begins with Eminem peforming "Not Afraid," which leads into Rihanna appearing onstage to begin "Love the Way You Lie." This was an excellent start to the show. Rihanna looked gorgeous and both her and Eminem sounded great.

Chelsea Handler starts the awards with a small skit of random rappers and other black guys smacking her ass. Then Lindsay Lohan gives her a No drinking pep talk before smacking her ass too. Chelsea does the usual semi-roasting of some of the nominees and other celebrities when onstage.

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" wins Best Female Video. Her acceptance speech was a little emotional. She thanks Alexander McQueen (RIP) and the gays that came with her to the show.

30 Seconds to Mars "Kings and Queens" wins Best Rock Video. They thank the fans and their families for the honor of winning the awards.

Justin Beiber performs on a stage outdoors. For a teen hearttrhob, he got the female appeal. But as an artist, he was disappointing. Not a long performance for one, and it focused more on his dancing and his drum solo. Meh.

Usher performs a medley of his songs from his latest cd. Amazing light show and great dance moves. I am getting a little curious if he was lip synching... he didn't sound out of breath when singing after all his dancing. Just saying...

Eminem's "Not Afraid" wins Best Male Video. He was not present to accept the award, since he was headed to NYC for a performance in the morning.

Florence and the Machine performs... and I have discovered an artist that I want to hear more of. This woman is amazing! Download the song "Dog Days are Over" NOW!!!!!

Travie McCoy performs "Billionaire" going into the commercial break. Ok, it looked like a commercial break. Now they cut to the outdoor stage where Ciara was performing. Are they just giving us teaser performances??? What the heck?

Lady Gaga wins her second Moonman for Best Pop Video. Again for Bad Romance. Her outfit, which I think was another Alexander McQueen piece, looked like the Statue of Liberty but in all black. I thought it looked good, even if it was too heavy for her to walk in, lol

Taylor Swift peforms. First thing is a video of what happened with her and Kanye from last year's VMA's. Then it fades to this room that looked like an abandoned, old house, where her and her bandmates were sitting. Taylor looks very elegant. Creamy white dress, short hair, and red lipstick... very 1940's look.

Drake's performance starts of with Mary J. Blige... she looks and sounds amazing. No offense to you Drake, you are a good artist and all, but I was digging Miss Blige way more than you.

Evan Rachel Wood and Joe Magnarelli present the technical award winners. Hehe... got my True Blood fix before watching the season finale!

Mini performance of Jason Derulo's "Riding Solo."

Jersey Shore cast sitting in a jacuzzi onstage. Suprise, suprise.

Eminem wins for a second time. Best Hip Hop Video for "Not Afraid"

B.O.B. performs. He starts of with Bruno Mars for "Nothing on You," then joins Hayley Williams for "Airplanes!" I HAD to turn up the volume!!! Then Hayley moves on to sing "The Only Exception" with her Paramore bandmates. Beautiful lighting... an orange hue that resembled stars in the sky.

Justin Beiber wins Best New Artist. I knew he would win because all the people texting were the teen girls.

Linkin Park performance. Sounds like they are transitioning to a newer sound. Still techno sounding, but different than before. And darker. Not as secular as before, leaning toward religious in the lyrics. But it works... and I'm liking it.

Teaser of the movie Burlesque... yep. Knew that would creep up somewhere.

Ah, Cher is at the VMA's... dressed in her "If I Could Turn Back Time" outfit. She presents the VMA for Video of the Year.... Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." Gaga's emotional, announced her new album would be called "Born this Way." Then, she sings a few lines... I WANT HER ALBUM NOW!!!!!

Kanye wraps up the show. Wearing a candy apple red suit and black shirt. He's performing a new song. I like the song... it's a more personal one, about love. He even had ballerinas dancing onstage. Classy touch. And he ended the performance with some pyrotechnics. Not bad Kanye... not bad.

Well, there's the VMA's in a nutshell. I would like to say that Deadmau5 did a great job with being the the DJ for the night. I found out he will be in Kansas City next month and I just might have to go.

No suprises this year.... that kinda sucked.
